Accessibility Audit: Idre Fjäll Booking Flow
Evaluating how a digital booking experience can become more inclusive and accessible for all users.
Project Type
School Assignment (Group)
Role
Accessibility Specialist
Duration
3 weeks (2025)
Project in short
As part of my Accessibility course, we conducted an accessibility audit of an existing digital service.
Our team selected Idre Fjäll’s online booking flow to identify barriers preventing users with different abilities from completing a booking easily and to propose improvements for a more inclusive experience.
Solution
Through structured manual testing and WCAG-based evaluation, we mapped key accessibility issues and prioritised clear, actionable recommendations.
Our proposed improvements focused on navigation, readability, and cognitive support to make the flow more accessible to everyone.
Outcome
The audit resulted in a prioritised list of accessibility fixes aligned with WCAG 2.2 success criteria.
Addressing these would enable Idre Fjäll to provide a more inclusive digital experience and strengthen both trust and conversion.
Work in detail
During our four-week Accessibility course, we stepped into the role of accessibility specialists and carried out a full audit of an existing digital service.
We chose Idre Fjäll’s online booking flow, which functioned well visually but excluded many users with visual, motor, or cognitive impairments.
Our goal was to evaluate the complete booking journey, from homepage to checkout, identify key accessibility barriers, and translate WCAG 2.2 guidelines into clear, actionable recommendations.
The project allowed us to combine technical testing with human-centred thinking, balancing compliance with an inclusive and seamless user experience.
Our process
Scope
Desktop booking flow: homepage → search → product → cabin → add-ons → cart.
Methods
Manual testing using keyboard navigation and VoiceOver, supported by WAVE, axe DevTools, HeadingsMap, and Accessibility Insights.
Analysis
Each issue was documented with problem, impact, WCAG reference, and recommendation.
Prioritisation
Issues were categorised as High, Medium, or Low based on user impact and criticality.
Key Findings
Strengths
Colour contrast met AA standards.
Static images included clear and descriptive alt text.
Error messages provided both colour and textual feedback.
Issues
Keyboard navigation: Hidden menus required up to 50 tab presses before reaching search.
Screen readers: Heading structure inconsistent; missing ARIA labels.
Zoom/text size: Layout broke at 200% zoom.
Cognitive accessibility: No progress indicator, limited whitespace, and no pause control for video content.
Recommendations
Remove hidden menus from the tab order.
Establish a consistent heading hierarchy and ARIA labelling.
Use relative units for text and verify layout stability at 200% zoom.
Add a progress bar and a clear back button to improve orientation.
Provide a pause control for videos and increase whitespace for better readability.
Ensure all images, including frequently updated ones on the homepage, have clear and descriptive alt text.
Outcome
We delivered a accessibility report with annotated screenshots, WCAG mapping, and prioritised actions.
Implementing these recommendations would make Idre Fjäll’s booking flow more inclusive and compliant while improving the overall user experience and business performance.
Reflections
Accessibility is not an add-on, it’s a core part of good design that benefits everyone.
This project demonstrated how small structural and semantic changes can have a significant impact.
It strengthened my ability to identify accessibility barriers, collaborate effectively with developers, and translate WCAG guidelines into tangible, user-centred design improvements.
